Alert Notification "LiveUpdate was unable to complete successfully" is generated by Symantec Information Foundation Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange
| Situation: | Symantec Information Foundation Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SIFMSMSE) generates an Alert Notification "LiveUpdate was unable to complete successfully," but the virus definitions are updated. |
| Solution: | If Liveupdate is enabled for both Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) or Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) and SIFMSMSE
- Enable LiveUpdate only for Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) or Symantec AntiVirus (SAV)
- Disable LiveUpdate in SIFMSMSE.
- Open the SIFMS MSE Console
- Go to Admin
- Go to Liveupdate/Rapid Release Schedule
- Uncheck "Enable automatic virus definitions updates"
- For more details, please follow the document Configuring LiveUpdate for multiple Symantec products installed on the same computer.
- If disabling Liveupdate in SIFMS MSE (and at the same time enabling Liveupdate in SEP/SAV) does not resolve the error, proceed with the next section.
Rename the Downloads folder
- Log on to the Exchange server on which SIFMSMSE is installed.
- Open Windows Explorer.
- Go to the folder Liveupdate in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate (default path).
- The folder Liveupdate contains a subfolder called Downloads. Rename the folder to _Downloads.
- A next scheduled Liveupdate (in SEP) should no longer generate error messages in Log.Liveupdate or Alert Notifications from SIFMSMSE.
Re-register SMSMSE with LiveUpdate
- Review the Log.LiveUpdate file and search for "SMSMSE". If it is the same issue, this product should not show up during the period that you are experiencing the errors.
- Ensure that the error you receive is the same.
- Stop the Symantec Mail Security for Exchange service
- Register the DLL (assuming SMSMSE version 6.0.x):
Open a command prompt (Start>Run> cmd)
- in a 32bit environment: regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\6.0\Server\SAVFMSELU.dll"
- in a 64bit environment: regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\SMSMSE\6.0\Server\SAVFMSELU.dll"
- Start the Symantec Mail Security for Exchange service
- Run LiveUpdate from SMSMSE console.
