About licensing managed clients when using Symantec Client Security 2.X Business Pack or Symantec Client Security 3.X Business Pack
Situation:
You need to know how to register and license your Symantec Client Security 2.X Business Pack or Symantec Client Security 3.X Business Pack in a managed environment.
Follow the instructions below to obtain and install a license file for managed clients.
To obtain a license file
- Find the serial number that came in the box with your purchase.
The serial number starts with a letter, followed by 10 numbers (For example: F1234567890)
- Register your serial number to request a permanent license file online at the Symantec Licensing and Registration site.
Symantec will send a license file to the email address that you gave when you registered.
- Find the license file in the email message that you received.
- Copy the license file from the email message onto your hard disk, and note where you put it.
- Using a decompression tool, decompress the .zip attachment to produce the license file ending in .slf
Note: Symantec's licensing tool compresses or "zips" license files to make them smaller and quicker to download. These "zipped" files are not self-extracting and require third-party software such as WinZip or PKZip to open. If you are unsure whether you need zip utility software, visit the

Install a license file for managed clients
For clients that are managed through Symantec System Center, license seats are allocated at the server group level, and a client receives its license seat automatically when it checks in with its parent server. When a license seat expires, the client receives a new, valid license from its primary server, if one is available. If a license seat expires, the client no longer receives content updates.
Note: Content licenses cannot be allocated through client groups, only through server groups. After a seat is allocated to a client, it can not be revoked.
To install a license file for managed clients
- Navigate to the Symantec System Center License View.
- In the left pane, right-click a node, and then click All Tasks > Symantec License Management > Manage License Seat Allocations.
See the following example:

- In the Manage License Seat Allocations dialog box, in the Filters group, select the server group in the Server Group drop-down list.
If Manage License Seat Allocations is accessed from a server group node, the server group is preselected.
- Click Add to start the License Allocation Wizard.
- In step 1 of the License Allocation Wizard, click Browse to locate the content license file.
- In step 2 of the License Allocation Wizard, specify the number of license seats from the content license file to allocate to the selected server group.
