How to uninstall Norton CleanSweep 2000 or 2001 manually
Situation:
This document describes how to uninstall Norton CleanSweep manually.
Solution:
If you want to uninstall CleanSweep manually because you cannot uninstall CleanSweep using the Add/Remove Programs applet or the CleanSweep Uninstall program, do the following:
- Reinstall CleanSweep over the existing installation.
- Use the Add/Remove Programs applet to uninstall it.
If you still cannot use the Add/Remove Programs applet, then uninstall CleanSweep manually.
Note: This document covers CleanSweep versions 4.5, 4.7 (2000), and 5.0 (2001) only. For versions 3.0, Deluxe 3.x, 4.0, and 4.10, read the document

To uninstall CleanSweep manually:
- Save your CleanSweep configuration data. For instructions, read the document How to save log files and backups before uninstalling or upgrading Norton CleanSweep.
- Start Windows in Safe mode to minimize the possibility of conflicts with other programs that may be running when Windows is started normally.
Note: Safe mode uses the default Windows VGA and mouse drivers. While in Safe mode, peripheral devices, such as CD-ROM drives, printers, network, and sound cards may not be available. Windows NT 4 does not have a Safe mode that you can restart in.
- To start Windows 95 in Safe mode:
- Click Start, and then click Shut Down. The Shut Down Windows dialog box appears.
- Click Restart, and then click Yes. Windows shuts down and the computer restarts.
- When you see Starting Windows 95, then press F8. The Windows 95 Startup Menu appears.
- Press the number corresponding to Safe mode, and then press Enter. Windows starts in Safe mode.
- To start Windows 98 in Safe mode:
- Click Start, and then click Shut Down. The Shut Down Windows dialog box appears.
- Click Restart, and then click OK. Windows shuts down and the computer restarts.
- As the computer restarts, press and hold down the Ctrl key until the Windows 98 Startup Menu appears.
- Press the number corresponding to Safe mode, and then press Enter. Windows starts in Safe mode.
- To start Windows Me in Safe mode:
- Click Start, and then click Shut Down. The Shut Down Windows dialog box appears.
- Click Restart, and then click OK. Windows shuts down and the computer restarts.
- As the computer restarts, press and hold down the Ctrl key until the Windows Me Startup Menu appears.
- Press the number corresponding to Safe mode, and then press Enter. Windows starts in Safe mode.
- To start Windows 2000 in Safe mode:
- Click Start, and then click Shut Down. The Shut Down Windows dialog box appears.
- Click Restart the computer, and then click Yes.
- As the computer restarts, you see a continuous line along the bottom of the screen, which is similar to |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||. Beneath this line is the text "For trouble-shooting and advanced startup options for Windows Me, press F8." Immediately press F8.
- Type the number for Safe mode, and then press Enter. Windows starts in Safe mode.
- To start Windows XP in Safe mode:
- Click Start, and then click Shut Down. The Shut Down Windows dialog box appears.
- Click Restart the computer, and then click Yes.
- As the computer restarts, you see a boot menu. Press F8.
- Use the arrow keys to navigate to Safe mode, and then press Enter. Windows starts in Safe mode.
Note: In Safe mode, Windows uses default settings: VGA monitor, no network, Microsoft mouse driver, and the minimum device drivers required to start Windows. You may not have access to CD-ROM drives, printers, or other devices.
- Delete the CleanSweep program group and files from the StartUp folder:
- Open Windows Explorer and go to the Startup folder.
- Delete each of the following shortcuts:
CleanSweep
CleanSweep Smart Sweep-Internet Sweep
Fast & Safe Cleanup
Norton Safe
All remaining CleanSweep modules
If a shortcut is not listed, skip it and continue with the next shortcut.
- Delete shortcuts to any CleanSweep modules that are on the desktop:
- Locate any CleanSweep shortcuts on the desktop such as CleanSweep, Norton Safe, and Fast & Safe Cleanup.
- Select these files, and then press Delete.
- Delete the CleanSweep folder:
- Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
- Click View, and then click Options (Folder Options with Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher installed).
- Click the View tab, click Show all files, uncheck Hide MS-DOS file extensions, and then click OK.
- Navigate to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Norton CleanSweep
(If you installed CleanSweep to a location other than the default, then navigate to that path instead.)
- Click File, and then click Delete.
- Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the folder and all its contents.
- Delete shared .dll files from the System Folder:
- In Windows Explorer, navigate to the C\Windows\System folder (If you installed Windows to a path other than the default, then navigate to that folder instead.)
- Locate and delete the following files:
- Apitrap.dll
- Cshook.vxd
- Qdcspi.dll
- Qdcsinet.dll
If a file is not present, skip it and continue with the next file.
- Close Windows Explorer.
- Remove CleanSweep registry entries:
CAUTION: We strongly recommend that you back up the system registry before making any changes. Incorrect changes to the registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Please make sure you modify only the keys specified. Please see the document How to back up the Windows registry before proceeding.
- Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
- Type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
- Navigate to the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\CSHOOK
- Click the CSHOOK subkey, click Edit, and then click Delete.
- Repeat steps 3 through 4 for the following subkeys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Norton CleanSweep
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Norton CleanSweep
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\CSINSM32.EXE
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\CS32.EXE
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\CSUSEM32.EXE
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\QDCDFS.EXE
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\QDCSQS.EXE
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\NMAIN.EXE
Notes:
--- Only remove the last key if there are no other Symantec products installed on the computer.
--- If some of these keys are not present, skip this step and continue with step 2f.
- Navigate to the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\CSINJECT.EXE
If this string value is not present, skip this step and continue with step 8.
- Click the Csinject.exe string value, click Edit, and then click Delete.
- Click Registry, and then click Exit to save the changes and close the Registry Editor.
- Restart the Computer:
- Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
- Click Restart, and then click OK.
- After restarting, CleanSweep will be completely uninstalled.
